Choosing an exercise facility

While it is not necessary for you to join a gym or fitness center to get enough physical activity, certain people may stay more committed to being physically active when they do.

What is important in choosing an exercise facility?

  • Convenient Location. The single most important factor in staying committed is finding a facility that has a convenient location.

  • Accessibility. Can you get there easily and do you feel safe parking, walking, and/or driving there? If you need handicapped access, does the facility have it?

  • Equipment and Programs. What are you looking for? Do you want to swim or do you just want classes? Fees will reflect the amount and kinds of equipment and services available to members.

  • Atmosphere. Will you feel comfortable? It is best to visit during the hours you would use the facility.

  • Staffing. Often staffing is one of the last things considered, although this may be the most important consideration for your specific needs. Ask about staff qualifications and the amount of time that you can expect someone to personally help you. If you have a health problem, make sure the staff is trained in dealing with people who have chronic conditions.

  • Cost. Consider the value as well as price.

Choosing an exercise video

Exercise videos are a good way to stay active and keep your interest, but it is a good idea to investigate before you buy.

  • Talk with others about videos they use.
  • Try borrowing videos from the library or video store.
  • Be sure the video you choose has a qualified instructor.
  • Make sure the video has music that appeals to you.
  • If just beginning an exercise program, look for videos that are labeled low-impact or beginner.
Think about choosing more than one type of video. This may help you stick to your physical activity goals.
