Safety issues
How should I dress for physical activity?
Footwear: Look for shoes that:
- Offer support for feet and ankles.
- Give your toes enough room so you can wiggle them while standing.
- Have soles that cushion and have a non-skid surface.
- Are appropriate for weather and floor surfaces.
- Fit the natural outline of the foot and fit snugly, but not tightly. When you stand, there should be about 1/2 inch space (about a thumbnail) beyond the big toe or the longest toe.
- Are designed for the activity you are planning on doing. Walking shoes are for walking. Dress shoes will not have the cushioning and support your feet need for extended walking.
- Remember:
-- Buy new shoes when your current shoes show signs of wear such as a worn tread on the heel or bottom.
-- Appropriate foot care for nails and skin should be part of your daily routine.
-- See a podiatrist if foot care is difficult.
-- Finding a comfortable shoe is important for those who have diabetes, poor circulation, infections, corns, or blisters.

Clothing
- Wear loose fitting clothes that allow you to move freely.
- Dress in layers so you can take off a layer if you get too hot.
- Wear socks to absorb sweat.
- Avoid rubberized or plastic suits, pants, or shirts. These clothes will make you lose too much fluid and may cause you to overheat.
- If walking or biking outside, you may want to wear reflective clothing or put reflective tape on clothes.
- During the summer:
-- Wear light-colored cotton or cotton-blend clothing that reflects the sun's rays.
-- Wear a hat that has at least a three- inch brim to protect against sunburn.
-- Soaking the hat with water will help keep you cool.
- During the winter:
-- Wear layered clothes.
-- Use mittens, gloves, or cotton socks to protect your hands.
-- Wear a hat, since up to 40% of your body's heat is lost through your neck and head.
